IV. Supplies for disinfecting near piano. Benzalkonium chloride (sometimes called BZK) is a quaternary ammonium compound used in hospital and restaurant sanitation, and as a topical antiseptic (Bactine spray). It is also one of the active ingredients in Lysol. It is listed (as "quaternary ammonium" or QA for short) in EPA and FDA lists as a suitable disinfectant for COVID-19.
  • For wiping piano keys on the go: 0.13% benzalkonium chloride towelette from Dynarex; 2 sheets should be sufficient for 88 keys.
  • For painted/nonporous surfaces (for example, piano fallboard, music stand, bench, plexiglass, also keyboard), can wipe with Steramine ("Sanitab") solution which is a common restaurant disinfectant safe for food-contact surfaces (also a final rinse of glasswares).
    • Standard usage concentration (0.02%) is 1 tablet per 1 gallon of water (recommend dissolve in small amount of hot water first before dilute to 1 gallon. The tablet can require a bit of shaking and waiting before fully dissolved in cold water.)
    • Manufacturer recommends for COVID, 2-3 times more concentrated (2-3 tablets per gallon of water).
    • Spray on a microfiber cloth and wipe. Leave slightly damp on surface (evaporate in 10 sec or so.)
